The Dracula
legend is one of the most defining elements of Transylvanian tourism. Because there are many books and films dealing with the voivodeship. (Whose original name is no longer known to everyone). The origin of the name Dracula is not entirely clear, it may come from the Latin term dragon, draco, since Vlad was a member of the Order of the Dragon Knight. Another solution is the Romanian word dracul, which means devil, demon, dragon. In any case, in the Saxon chronicles of Transylvania and in the chronicle of Jan Dlugosz, the voivode who impaled him is already referred to as Dracula.
Vargyas Strait and Balázs Orbán Cave!
In this place, nature has accumulated so many great things, so many breathtakingly beautiful things, that the wonder is actually exhausted by admiring them.” Balázs Orbán wrote about the Vargyas Strait almost a century and a half ago.
The Vargyas Szoros is without a doubt one of the most beautiful and interesting natural attractions in Transylvania and within that in Székelyland, with its caves, limestone cliffs, witness rocks, and characteristic wildlife.
The caves of the gorge have been used by people as a place of refuge since ancient times, as evidenced by the many finds and objects found in the caves over time, and later people who were more interested in the beauty of the gorge visited here with admiration. Despite its difficult approach and the little tourist information about it, nowadays the gorge has become a popular camping and hiking spot, visited by more and more people every year.
Vargyas-szoros: A mountain stream trickling from stone to stone between sky-scraping rock walls, a four-kilometer-long cave system formed in a row during the Ice Age: the Harminchármas, the Lócsűr, the Kőcsűr, the thousand-star Spelaeus; opposite the tower of Csala, resplendent in the September light, and the Ejtőkő beyond. And the largest of the 125 caves discovered so far, with a total length of 7,410 meters, the Balázs Orbán cave, which can be reached by iron boat. Among the passages at a height of 5–200 meters above the water level of the stream, the smaller ones are 5–10 meters long, and the larger ones are 10–1,527 meters long. In addition to numerous protected plants and animals, 17 of the 30 species of bats found in Romania live here. This is the country of peace, which the cavers’ hymn, the cavers believe: “whoever has not seen the world of silence, does not understand it anyway”.
The Millennium Border (Ezereves hatar)
is located 50 km from Csíkszereda, at the end of the Gyimesbükk settlement. This is one of the easternmost points of historical Hungary. Here we find the boundary stones of the former border of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and the former easternmost railway guardhouse of the Monarchy. The railway guardhouse bearing the number 30 is one of the symbols of the Millennium Border.
Gyimes is a special “Stream Country” on the eastern border of the former Csíkszék, at the upper course of the Tatros.
Not only in the Tatros valley, but also in its right and left tributaries, typical mountain settlements meet under steep hillsides, green pastures and dark pine forests.
In the Tatros valley (Gyimesbükk, Gyimesfelsőlok, Gyimesközéplok) live the Gyimes Csángos, who partly come from the Szeklers who fled to Moldavia and partly stayed in Transylvania.
Its name probably comes from the name of the ancient Úž ethnic group that lived here. Traces of an old castle can be seen at the northeastern end of Abaksa mountain. The Uz valley was the scene of fierce battles in the First and Second World Wars. In its cemetery there is a chapel built by the Münkacsi infantry regiment in 1917, II. its World War II monument was erected in 1994. Until the Treaty of Trianon, it belonged to the Kászonalcíki District of Csík County. It is bordered by the Kistölgyesi or Kőkert Straits with the remains of the former border customs.
Transfăgărășan Road
The 90 km long Transfăgărășan road has become one of the symbols of Transylvania. The most famous road in Romania leads up to a height of 2042 meters. He does all this among the huge peaks of the Fogaras Mountains. It leads up to a height of 2042 m and then passes through a tunnel under the main ridge. It has a total of 830 bridges, 27 viaducts and 5 tunnels.
Kelemen havasok
the seat of God (Scaunul Domnului in Romanian) is a 1381 meter high mountain peak located in the southwestern part of the Kelemen havasov. It is built of andesite and was created by selective erosion (the softer rocks around it were worn away by the water). The area is considered to be the westernmost part of the Kelemen-havasov range. The material of the mountain is andesite, and its current shape was created when the softer rock material around it was worn away and eroded, leaving the harder mountain block of the Istszéke showing its current shape.
The Egyes-kő
(Piatra Singuratică) is a protruding boulder in the Hagymás Mountains, in the eastern part of Hargita County. Looking at the Hagymás Mountains from the Csíki Basin, on the left we can see the 1,792 m high slightly peaked boulder of Nagy-Hagymás, which is the highest point of the Hagymás Mountains. In the middle, the four-peaked rocks of the 1,608 m high Egyes-kő can be seen, and to the right, the 1,706 m high, long-stretching rock walls of Öcsém overlook the Csíki basin.
